Recently, I’ve been pretty off with my workout schedule. Doing a little here and there but not really going all in. (I’m sure none of you can relate) But this past week I was determined to get after it and start off strong. #NeverMissAMonday in full effect. So, I popped out of bed bright and early at 5:30 a.m., grabbed my workout clothes, and got ready to head out the door. But – I couldn’t find my headphones. How was I supposed to run in…silence?!? Working out with music, to me, is a MUST. I cannot remember the last time I misplaced something so I got very annoyed very quickly. I turned my apartment upside down looking for them and they were just GONE. Vanished. Never to be seen again.
I was bummed. So much so that I almost didn’t go for my run. It was 5:45 now and I had a prayer call at 6:30. My mind went all “the schedule has changed — abort the mission”. I could not imagine running with sirens and cars as my “music”, but I said to myself, “Self, we don’t miss Monday’s anymore. Run without music”.
So I did. I ran to Lake Michigan, caught the gorgeousness that is the lake and the morning sun and soaked up Chicago’s beauty. I breathed in the fresh air (as fresh as city air can be) and finished a two-mile run. It felt AMAZING. And I didn’t miss my music. I felt GREAT!! I looked down at my Runkeeper app to stop the timer and write a note about how the run went. (Sidenote: I highly recommend this app for current or aspiring runners. If you have another suggestion comment below and let me know!) After reviewing the stats on my run, I noticed my numbers seemed off. I thought the app was broken because I somehow had dropped my two-mile time by TWO WHOLE MINUTES. I checked the map to make sure it started at the location where I started and it did. Double-checked the route – accurate. I couldn’t believe it. How in the world did I absolutely demolish that two-mile run after not exercising for two weeks?? And most importantly – without Beyoncé?!? And live to tell about it?? I hadn’t run a mile that fast since I was barely a college athlete. I could not understand how this was even possible.
I felt God say to me “you don’t need what you think you need to be successful.”
What a freeing truth that was. I really thought I couldn’t complete a decent run without a catchy song in my ear to keep me going. I just knew my time would be slow, if I even finished. And this got me thinking…how often are we convincing ourselves we don’t have what it takes? Or what we need? Enough of this or that?
Personally, I get caught up sometimes in striving to be this woman I have created in my head. And at times it’s felt like if I’m not “HER” then I can never be successful. But that’s just not true. And more than anything, even if I was “HER”, my efforts are in vain if God and His kingdom aren’t the center.
My belief is that success comes when I do what I can on earth with God’s guidance and allow Him to do what only He can do. I’m successful when He blesses, anoints and favors me. I am nothing without Him. I don’t need headphones to conquer a 5:30 a.m. run; I don’t need the perfect skin, the ideal mate, and the best writing skills. I don’t need that exact amount of money before I start something or have everything in the perfect order to begin. All of these things are nice and certainly help, but what I really need, above all, is Jesus. No matter what’s in my tool bag or what’s not – I will be successful with Him on my side.
Be encouraged today. If you’re lacking somewhere, God will do more than make up for it. Whether it’s a morning run or a new business venture – press on towards what He has called you to do with holy confidence in Him. He will carry you through every deficiency, setback, or bump in the road. When God sends, He supplies. And when He calls, He equips. Trust Him. You have what you need.
But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Chrisy Jesus- Philippians 4:19
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakenness- 2 Corinthians 12:9
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness- 2 Peter 1:3
But those who seek the Lord lack no good thing- Psalm 34:10
UPDATE: I found my headphones that were missing in the couch cushion. So they didn’t vanish after all.
P.S. Last weekend, I hosted the first ever Pancakes & Prayer with 7 amazing women. We devoured pancakes, bacon, sausage, & mimosas. We discussed our passions and how we could involve God in the desires He has put on our hearts. And we PRAYED. It was a great morning and I can’t wait to do it again!
The pancake recipe I used is over on the recipe page and it makes the fluffiest yummiest pancakes! We also had a topping bar full of blueberries, strawberries, chocolate chips & raspberries. Warm syrup was also included. Our bellies & hearts were full. What a feast it was!
